Recently years our knowledge about flat urothelial lesions and
papillary urothelial neoplasms of urinary bladder, have been
redefined. In recognition of this evidence, the consensus group
of pathologists and urologists (WHO/ISUP '98, WHO '99) have agreed
to classify the flat lesions into a) flat hyperplasia, b) papillary
hyperplasia, c) reactive (inflammatory) atypia, d) atypia of unknown
significance, e) atypia (low-grade intraurothelial neoplasia),
f) carcinoma in situ (high-grade intraurothelial neoplasia) and
the papillary neoplasms into a) urothelial papilloma, b) urothelial
papilloma, inverted type, c) papillary neoplasm of low malignant
potential and d) papillary carcinoma, grade I, grade II, grade
III. The WHO/ISUP panel have proposed certain widely accepted
histological criteria for the diagnosis of these benign and malignant
lesions, that will provide high reproducibility among pathologist
and consequently optimal therapy with beneficial results for the
patients.
Key words: Âladder, urothelial neoplasms, classification.
