The need for a reappraisal of the role of the Physician, especially
the Pathologist, within the frame of the modern socioeconomic
international model, leads to roots of medical tradition, where
the image of Virchow predominates. Virchow is not only the founder
of modern Pathology, as it is taught and applied today, but clarified
and established the relation between Pathology, Social Medicine
and Medical Anthropology. This way, many neglected sides of the
causes and pathogenesis of diseases are recalled and elucidated,
along the principles of the Discipline of Pathology. Moreover,
emphasis on Medical Anthropolgy and Social Medicine creates new
terms for a better understanding of Health and Disease, of Prevention
and of Treatment, providing the decisive role is assigned to the
gnostic content of Pathology, so wealthy both biotheretically
and technologically.
Key words: Physiology, pathologic anatomy, anthropology,
Virchow.
