District General Hospital of Athens “KAT”, Athens
We present the case of a 62-year-old woman with type II diabetes,
who was admitted oi the Neurosurgery Department of the General
Hospital of Athens “EAO” with epileptic convulsions, due to a
lesion of the right frontal lobe with central necrosis simulating
an abscess. She underwent stereotactic surgery during which a
yellowish opaque fluid emerged from the center of the mass. Histological
examination of the neighbouring brain tissue revealed the presence
of fungus hyphae, which were identified to be of the species of
Aspergillus. The Gomori methenamine silver stain demonstrated
the characteristic septation of the hyphae of Aspergillus. The
unusual facts of this case are that the patient had previously
had a dental cyst of the lower mandible, which was treated symptomatically
without a microbiologic examination, and the false impression
of a tumor mass appearing in the MRI.
Key words: Aspergillus, abscess of the CNS, inflammations
of the CNS.
