Stefanogiannis I.
Pathology Department, General Hospital of Chania, Chania, Greece

Internet is a global network, which includes more than two hundred million connected computers, communicating with the same protocol and sharing a great amount of information concerning every human activity. Fast spreading of novel technologies creates a new social revolution that helps humans and machines communicate in perfect harmony in order to offer more accurate diagnostic and therapeutic services. Web-oriented services provide new opportunities and challenges to health professionals. Information that can be obtained from Medical Technologists refers to tissue preparation, histochemistry and immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and molecular biology techniques, quality control and safety in laboratory, labor relations and analysis of Medical Technologist's task and the confrontation of everyday technical difficulties encountered. However, with the exception of specialized topics about Medical Technologist's work, one can look via Internet for many scientific resources that cover the entire pathology. These topics include pathology databases, histological images, human anatomy images, lists of Pathology societies and scientific journals, bookstores, even virtual surfing experience in Pathology museums and collections. The aim of this paper is to provide current trends in procedures and facilities of Pathology laboratories and discuss the emerging role of the Web for the development of integral health services.

Key words: Internet, histotechnology.
