A case of a double neoplasm with independent primary sites, the
larynx and thyroid gland, in a 37 year old men, is presented.
The patient with a two years history of colloid goiter, complained
for a slowly growing paralaryngeal mass with progressive hoarseness
of voice and dysphagia. The histologic appearence of this subglottic,
submucosal tumor of 4 cm in diameter, originated from thyroid
cartilage, was that of a low grade chondrosarcoma (Grade I-II)
with few foci of dedifferentiation and partial infiltration of
the adjacent tissues. The synchronous excision of the left lobe
of thyroid gland revealed a focus of papillary carcinoma in a
background of colloid nodular goiter. The rarity of cartilaginous
tumors of the larynx and especially its unusual coexistence with
papillary thyroid carcinoma, motivated us to present this case
which is probably unique in the literature.
Key words: Chondrosarcoma, Larynx, papillary carcinoma,
thyroid.
